Google Wallet US Passports Coming, Keep Expectations Low

Google Wallet will soon let people in the United States add their international passports. This is great for those waiting for their state to support digital IDs. However, it won’t work for everything.

The Passport feature can be used at some TSA checkpoints. Google is still figuring out which ones. It’s also good for some car rental verifications. But, you’ll still need to carry your physical ID for border checks.

Google is now handling the task of matching data between physical and digital passports. They will add a label called “Verified with Google Wallet” to the new digital ID type.

Google mentioned a use case where the ID can verify age at bars. In this case, users can share only their birthdates. No other personal details like address or name will be shared.

The feature will be introduced state by state, like Digital ID. Google is adding support for digital ID in Wallet in Iowa, New Mexico, and Ohio. These states will join Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland. Colorado’s MyColorado app will soon let businesses verify digital IDs.
